Airport Development Project December 2022

Airport Development Project December 2022

FOREWORD

What an amazing year it has been!

The London-based consultancy firm, lnfrata, completed its comprehensive review of the Philip Goldson International Airport’s business matrix, and having presented its findings, the Belize Airport Concession Company Limited is in discussions with Government to implement a large-scale modernization investment program to deliver a fresh start, a new vision of what the P.G.I.A. can become.

On Wednesday, 28th September 2022, as the sun rose high over the P.G.I.A., members of the Management Team became aware of a quietly encroaching eventuality – a simulated full-scale emergency exercise to test the state of readiness in responding to accidents and with participation and supervision of officials of I.C.A.O. N.A.C.C. Regional Office, COCESNA, Civil Aviation Department and multiple national agencies. With a bit of theatricality, the simulation exercise was declared an unqualified success.

Our Company joined with airports around the world in observing 20th October 2022 as the International Day of Air Traffic Controllers. Controllers are honored for overseeing daily regulatory international and national procedures for the highest standards of air safety and thus safe travels. Deep gratitude is extended to the Chief Air Traffic Controller Marvin Polanco and the team of competent Controllers.

The P.G.I.A.’s service-focused staff ensured that while Hurricane Lisa forced a closure of business on Wednesday, 2nd November 2022, Belize’s international airport re-opened at 11 :00 a.m. on Thursday, 3rd November 2022. Thanks to so many role models, including folks from Civil Aviation and the Meteorological Office, for putting the value of service into action.

While our operational level stands at 80% of pre-pandemic times, B.A.C.C.’s staff, airline partners and stakeholders are anticipating and preparing for a busy season in 2023.

Prayers and condolences are shared with the families of our Duty Managers, Marsha Hinkson and Emile Evans, whose father, Mr. Keith Hinkson, and wife, Mrs. Paula Evans, passed. Thus, in the words of Jack Thorne of Harry Potter: “Those we love never truly leave us, Harry. There are things that death cannot touch.”

In this Advent season, when we listen with care and speak with love, may the festive decorations, the clinking of glasses, the fits of laughter, and the beautiful colors of peace and joy offer unforgettable moments and sincere thanksgiving and purposefulness. Together, let us share all of the attributes of life.

Thank you again for the tremendous support and collaborative work at the P.G.I.A. With friendship,
Jorge L. Espat

GOODBYE BOARDING PASSES, HELLO BIOMETRIC FACIAL RECOGNITION

Last week, Air New Zealand customers were some of the first to experience biometric verification at the boarding gate after a successful trial at Los Angeles Airport. It’s all part of Air New Zealand’s plan to take the friction out of travel and to make the journey through the airport that much smoother. No sighting passports and no scanning boarding passes.

Upon entering the US, customers are provided with the opportunity to register with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) using their biometric information.

BRITISH AIRWAYS ENABLES CUSTOMERS TO PURCHASE CARBON REMOVAL CREDITS

British Airways is now offering customers the chance to address their emissions from flying by purchasing certified carbon removal credits. This innovative new approach has been made possible through the airline’s new upgraded climate platform, CO2llaborate, marking another milestone in the airline’s BA Better Wor1d sustainability journey. While the carbon removal industry is still comparatively small in scale, scientists, governments and regulators including the United Nations recognize carbon removal projects as a vital tool to help address climate change

F.A.A. TO ADD POWERED-LIFT AIRCRAFT TO AIR CARRIER CATEGORY

The F.A.A. is proposing changes to its definitions covering air carriers to create scope for including new powered-lift aircraft such as eVTOL models in existing operational rules. On November 21, the agency issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) covering changes allowing it to determine on what terms powered lift aircraft that can’t be categorized as airplanes or rotorcraft could be regulated for air carrier operations, including scheduled air1ine services and on-demand charter. According to the FAA, the revised definitions represent “an important step toward making commercial air taxi operations a reality,” and it will allow 60 days for industry comments after the NRPM appears in the Federal Register.
