Airport Improvements Project – October 2026

Airport Access Road

A new 2,500 ft. airport access road including drainage, surface markings, signs, fencing, etc. was completed December, 2023.

Apron

Eastern expansion of the apron by some 275,000 sq. ft. has been completed and is operational. The newly expanded apron parking stands have increased by 60%, from 10 to 16, including a stand for a CATEGORY E aircraft.

Eastern Taxiway

A 195,000 sq. ft. eastern taxiway ‘ECO’ is scheduled for completion in the next few weeks and operational by year’s end. Upon completion, there will be access to the western end of the runway via taxiway Alpha and the eastern end of the runway via taxiway Delta.

Delta Taxiway

Work commended on Tuesday, 13th October 2026 on a fifth taxiway to accommodate small aircraft, or CATEGORY B, and is expected to be completed by mid-November, 2026.

Building

A 50,000 sq. ft. eastern expansion to the Airport Terminal Building is well advanced with completion expected in the first quarter of 2027. The expanded ATB will have three entrances, house airline offices, restrooms, stores, and main halls.

Car Park

Works have been completed for a new eastern car park for approximately 270 parking slots, with drainage, curb walls, surface markings, directional signs, lighting, new security booth, etc.

Refurbishment

Refurbishment of the existing Airport Terminal Building is almost completed and is being undertaken after operating hours. Immigration and Customs Halls have been refurbished; Terminal #1 has been enhanced; landside canopy has undergone improvement; works have been completed in the waving gallery and Departure Hall,
and the exotic wooden chairs have been replaced with the normal airport chairs.

One aspect of the refurbishment includes a multi-phase installation of solar panels for an alternative source of energy. Hundreds of solar panels have been installed at the ATB with additional panels to be installed at the Crash Fire Rescue facility and Cargo Building.

Fire Equipment

A purchase order has been placed with Oshkosh, Wisconsin, U.S.A. for the acquisition of a new state-of-the-art Oshkosh Fire Tender Stricker 3000. Delivery is expected in April, 2027.

Others

There are many other sub-components to the current Airport Improvements Project. Defective concrete slabs on the entire existing apron and taxiways are to be replaced and or repaired. Existing shoulders on Taxiway Alpha are to be completely replaced and new shoulders are to be constructed for Taxiways Bravo, Charlie, Delta and Eco. Remedial work is to be completed on the runway to seal reflective surface cracks.

Note

Even though Management and contractors are endeavoring to complete components in a timely manner, these are major works taking place within an operationally active environment. Therefore, estimated schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, operational requirements, compliance issues, safety and security, among others.

Aerodrome Certification

The P.G.I.A. received its second aerodrome certification for a period of two years, from 14th April 2026 through 13th April 2028 from the Belize Department of Civil Aviation. Management is grateful for the constancy of cooperation and collaboration.
